October was a busy month for the Sumba Hotel School!  We celebrated the official opening of the Hotel and Restaurant, as well as welcomed our first guest on October 7th.  While nervous to welcome their first guest, students from all departments did their best to provide 5-star service.  Front Office students welcomed the guest at reception, gave him a short tour, and brought his luggage to the room.  Meanwhile, Culinary students were busy preparing a delicious four-course meal.  At dinner, Restaurant and Bar students put their serving skills to the test – taking orders, serving dishes, and making sure the guest was enjoying his meal.  The students had a constructive first experience serving our guest allowing them to practically apply what they are learning in the classroom.
Along with opening the hotel, we also began offering community English classes.  The classes are from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM and are held Monday through Friday. SHF students, teachers, and volunteers take turns teaching together; these classes not only benefit the community but they strengthen our students’ English and leadership skills as well. It has been inspiring to see our neighbors and local members of the community spanning all ages interested in learning English.
Along with several guests, SHF also hosted student volunteers from Stenden University in Bali.  Stenden has been a great supporter of the Foundation, holding fundraising events and helping spread the word.  So, to see what all their hard work was going towards, four Stenden students came to visit.  During their week-long stay, the Stenden students helped at the farm, joined community English classes, and gave classes where they answered SHF students’ questions as well as shared experiences of their time in hotel school and on internship.  It was a great week for both our students and the Stenden volunteers. Upon their departure, the university students were already talking about their next visit to Sumba.
To end the month, SHF students and staff celebrated their first Sumbanese Halloween.  To gain practice organizing events, the Restaurant and Bar students were responsible for planning the party, delegating tasks to the other departments, and carving pumpkins.  The Housekeeping and Front Office students made all of the decorations and the Culinary students made delicious and spooky cakes.  It was a great way to end the month!
