Cross Trainning at Nihi Sumba
Our fifth and sixth groups are in their cross training through our partnership with world-renowned eco-resort, NIHI SUMBA. Group 5 departed from campus on Saturday, 26 January and included: Samuel (Culinary), Mia (Housekeeping), Monik (Front Office), Yuyun (Culinary), and Istar (R&B). We welcomed their return and sent the sixth group on 23 February. The sixth group included: Maria (Spa), Tomi (Culinary), Okta (Front Office), Lius (R&B), Ari (R&B), Marsel (Housekeeping). We wish this sixth group great success! It is amazing to see the students return more focused, motivated, and professional. This cross training is especially vital now that our students have prepared their CVs and are beginning to have interviews for their upcoming seven-month internships.

Morning Yoga session at the beach
There’s nothing better than yoga on the beach on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Thanks to our amazing volunteer yoga instructors, our guests, staff, and students can enjoy this relaxing practice with the sand in their toes, the sound of surf, and the sun on their faces. Om!
SHF comes in the villages to teach free English classes
Sumba Hospitality Foundation (SHF) is taking English to the people! Previously we offered FREE English classes to primary, middle, and high school students here on the Sumba Hospitality Foundation campus and students traveled long and far to attend these lessons. Now we are bringing English classes to them. Wonderful volunteers in the community have opened up their homes and over one hundred (100) students are enjoying FREE English lessons in their neighborhood three days per week. Go English Go!
Evening celebration of the Valentine’s day at SHF
Love was in the air on Valentine’s Day at SHF. On February 14th, the students prepared an amazing evening of wonderful food, entertainment, songs, and dance. All students joined in the party-planning for this love-filled event, and boy, they can plan an amazing party. Our students have love-filled hearts, but the overall theme this Valentine’s Day was togetherness. Valentines cards were exchanged, and mom Judy, the English teacher, made sure everyone felt special with a card and a treat on this wonderful day of peace, joy, and love.
Vegan Culinary Workshop at SHF
Our guests have a variety of dietary restrictions, and Maringi Sumba aim to please. Four vegan chefs from around the world held a four-day workshop for our Culinary students teaching them about and how to prepare raw foods and vegan cuisine. Who knew you could make so many tasty treats with tofu! Staff and students enjoyed tasting the fruits (and nuts) of their labor. Bon appétit!
A Sustainable world thanks to SHF’s initiatives
As an active member of our community in Southwest Sumba, Sumba hospitality Foundation continues our efforts in promoting environmental-friendly practices and creating a sustainable world, one small corner at a time. Nearly every month, Sumba Hospitaliy Foundation staff and students partner with local agencies to educate and empower the community in utilizing sustainable practices. Our group trash walks promote an “each one, teach one” philosophy, demonstrating the ease and importance of environmentally sustainable living. The result is cleaner streets, markets, and beaches, but more importantly giving the gift of knowledge that will spread for generations to come.
Tasting of students’ culinary masterpieces
Everyone on campus loves when our Culinary and Restaurant & Bar Departments collaborate in preparing a delicious array of tasty treats and unique beverages. Students are so proud to prepare these mini-feasts for staff and student to share their creative food and beverage offerings. They are almost as wonderful looking as they are deliciously tasting. We are so proud of how creative and professional our students are becoming.
